A tree fern endemic to Ecuador. The type material was collected more than a century ago on the western slopes of Atacazo and Corazn volcanos, which remain well-forested due to their difficult access. Could potentially occur inside the Reserva Ecolgica Cayambe-Coca and the Reserva Ecolgica Los Ilinizas, and the Parque Nacional Sangay. Collecting botanical samples of this species is difficult, which may be one reason why it is poorly represented in herbaria. The trunk is used as posts for fences and houses. No specimens of this species are housed in Ecuadorian museums. Nearly qualifies for listing as Vulnerable under criterion B.

Threats:
Major Threats
Some sites would be impacted by habitat loss for expanding agriculture, although other sites appear to be secure because of the steep nature of the terrain. The trunks are utilized locally for building fences and houses.
