Angiopteris smithii
EOL Text
Angiopteris smithii was previously placed in the monotypic genus Macroglossum. It differs from typical Angiopteris only in being once pinnate. The fertile structures are very similar to those of Angiopteris and therefore the species has been placed there traditionally. Genetic evidence shows some distance between the core Angiopteris-Archangiopteris clade and this species, but the genetic divergence is less than that of A. boninensis and A. durvilleana.
Angiopteris smithii is a rare species known from Sumatra and Borneo. It occurs on steep slopes in rain forests at middle elevation. Recently the species is offered in nurseries in tropical Florida, where the species proves to be a handsome garden plant.
